1521-1946 – An expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines in 1521.1565 - The first Spanish settlement by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi on the island of Cebu. 1570s - Legazpi formed the city of Manila. 6 May 1942 – 31 Jan 1945 – On 6 May 1942 American forces on the Philippine island of Corregido surrendered to the Japanese. Thousands of the American servicemen were taken prisoner of war, on 31 Jan 1945, US and Filipino troops were freed, the remaining 50 American prisoners. (Ancestry July August 2007 p28).

15 June 1991 – Mount Pinatubo, 55 miles north of Manila, which was dormant for 600 years, erupted and threw millions of tons of ash 50,000 feet into the air.
